Engineers who voiced concerns were marginalised. Status was seen to be more important than technical expertise in NASA’s decision making and dissenting views were often ignored. None of the warnings of potential danger moved up through the organisation to senior officials, or down to flight control. The Debris Assessment Team requested detailed photographs, but this request was not approved. Engineers continued to discuss the damage, but the discussions remained within their ‘area of expertise and level of seniority’. NASA sent a video of the take-off to the crew stating that: “ thermal analyses indicate possible localised structural damage, but no burn-through and no safety of flight issue”.ĭamage assessment meetings were held, but NASA could not provide the Columbia Accident Investigation Board (CAIB) with details on the flow of key information from these meetings and had difficulty in providing information on the relationships between departments in the space program, which had become a sprawling, compartmentalized agency. No inspection of the thermal protection system was made, nor were any contingency plans made. NASA considered it implausible that foam could cause significant damage to the wing leading edge system. NASA response during missionĪfter some discussion, the impact was declared not to be significant by NASA management. The design of the Shuttle meant that this was not a survivable event. This breach progressively melted the aluminum structure of the left wing, causing a loss of control at 10,000 mph, failure of the left wing, and finally breakup of the Shuttle. The damage caused by this impact allowed superheated air to penetrate through the leading edge insulation during re-entry. The thermal protection system on the leading edge of the wings was designed to withstand heat, not impact from debris or ice. This event was not detected by either the crew on board or the ground support teams until the next day. On January 16, 2003, at 81.7 seconds after launch, when the Shuttle was at about 65,600 feet and traveling at 1,650 mph, a large piece of hand-crafted insulating foam came off the external fuel tank, striking the leading edge of Columbiaʼs left wing. Columbia was the first space-rated Orbiter and differed slightly from C hallenger, Discovery, Atlantis, and Endeavour. This was the Space Shuttle Program’s 113th flight and Columbiaʼs 28th. On Saturday February 1, 2003, the space shuttle Columbia disintegrated during re-entry into the Earth’s atmosphere after a 17-day mission in space, with the loss of its seven-member crew. Debris from the Shuttle was scattered over 2000 square miles of east Texas. “Too often, accident investigations blame a failure only on the last step in a complex process, when a more comprehensive understanding of that process could reveal that earlier steps might be equally or even more culpable” (CAIB, 2003, p.6).

Vrataski trains Cage and accompanies him into battle. Soon, reawakening at the British base, Cage chooses a martial mentor: Sergeant Rita Vrataski (Emily Blunt), a commando fighter who was the heroine of the U.D.F.’s one prior military victory on the continent (she’s nicknamed the Angel of Verdun, extending a metaphor one generation back). The crucial and delicious detail is that Cage’s curse, to die again endlessly (though, somehow, seemingly painlessly), affords him a limitless capacity to learn on the job-each return to battle is both another lesson in warfare and another chance to probe the enemy’s vulnerabilities. Yet the movie hidden behind “Edge of Tomorrow” isn’t “Groundhog Day” but, rather, “Saving Private Ryan.” The terrifyingly gory opening sequence of Steven Spielberg’s film-the landing at Omaha Beach-poses a fundamental question about war: If the D Day combat had been reported in real time and in detail, if the uncensored newsreel footage that it generated played like Spielberg’s realistic scene-with its dismembered limbs, dangling viscera, incinerated bodies, cries of agony, scattered corpses, and waves of blood-would the American public have tolerated the pursuit of the war until the enemies’ surrender? And would sufficient numbers of American men have fought in it willingly? “Edge of Tomorrow,” as everyone already knows, is a sci-fi war film with a “Groundhog Day”-like premise: Cruise plays a soldier who, after being killed in combat, awakens the day before the battle and must relive, over and over, the moment of his death. The metaphorical overlay of fantasy and history is the best thing “Edge of Tomorrow” has to offer-and, for much of its running time, that overlay is enough to lend the movie a shiver of curious power. It opens this Friday, June 6th, the seventieth anniversary of D Day-and that massive and decisive Normandy landing, tweaked to fit the movie’s futuristic premise, is also its main dramatic event. It’s rare that the art of movies and the business of their distribution coincide as closely as they do with “Edge of Tomorrow,” the director Doug Liman’s new science-fiction vehicle for Tom Cruise.

This is an issue that permeates most every aspect of FlatOut 2. With so much dirt and debris all over the place, it's almost counterintuitive to want to drive these clean-looking rides right into the thick of it. Unfortunately, that style just doesn't jibe with the dirty feel of the races. Even though it's fun to smash up tricked-out tuner cars, they drive just about the same as the derby cars, so they don't really add anything to the package except a different visual style to those races. The one problem with all this, though, is that frankly, some of the cars just don't look like they belong. Though the floaty car feel from the first FlatOut is front and center once again in FlatOut 2, and though that feeling can be very disconcerting early on in the game, you'll get used to it, and because all the cars handle so similarly, you don't have to make any dramatic shifts in how you drive as time goes on. That's not to say that any of the cars handle particularly bad, mind you. Again, you notice differences in speed, but no matter how much you crank up the handling rating or the weight rating, you'll still feel like you're driving the same basic car across the board. But even these upgrades lack a measure of tangibility. Each car in the game has several ratings in categories like speed, acceleration, strength, weight, and the like, and all of these categories can be upgraded via new parts in the career mode. Size is really the only major difference, and even that is purely cosmetic (big trucks trump small racers in crashes, and so on). The odd thing about the new cars, however, is that apart from some expected speed differences, they really don't feel any different than the clunkers in terms of handling or durability. There are even new car classes, with race cars and street racers to go along with the typical junk cars. All the stuff you liked-like demolition derbies, figure-eight races, and stunt mode- is all there, with more track options and stunts tossed in. Massive automotive destruction returns in Bugbear's FlatOut 2.įlatOut 2 takes much of the basic content from the first game and tosses in a bunch more of it. However, these irritations don't suck away all the game's enjoyment, and those with a penchant for smashing and crashing cars will find FlatOut 2 an appealing piece of work. And some of the things that Bugbear didn't change still prove as problematic as they were a year ago. FlatOut 2 throws in some new, stylistic touches both in its content and aesthetics that make it feel more like a Burnout clone than something original. In FlatOut 2, the same basic concepts found throughout the original game are once again on display, but while more content has been added to the package to try to flesh things out, it is with these additions that FlatOut 2 begins to lose its way. That game consisted of big, clunky, filthy-looking cars that deformed in all sorts of spectacular ways while flying through the air, crashing into one another, and even periodically sending the drivers of said vehicles crashing through the windshield in a rag-doll-heavy heap. Enter last year's FlatOut by developer Bugbear, a demolition racer in the purest sense. As much fun as the Burnout series of racing games can be, sometimes you want something a little grittier and grimier than the glossy, pristine-looking races that series has had on offer in recent years. No one seems to know exactly how many covers Fabio appeared on during his career, but it was likely in the hundreds. Illustrator Elaine Duillo did many covers featuring Fabio And it was Lindsey who introduced the world to a blonde model who would become inexorably linked to the genre for many years to come: Fabio. In the 1980s, few were doing more epic clinches on their covers than the author Johanna Lindsey. This ubiquitous romance cover design even got its own name: clinch covers. These covers are familiar to anyone who grew up stealing glances of them in the grocery store in the 1980s: half-nude men, women with gravity-defying hair. “These books were the only place where women could see themselves and see the trauma that women in the world often have to deal with and then also see themselves in triumph and in hope and in, you know, passion and happiness and love-like these are powerful, subversive ideas.” The Clinch Tender is the Storm was illustrated by Elaine DuilloĪs the romance genre exploded in the 1980s, the covers got more over-the-top and eye-catching. This is why romance novels got saddled with the nickname, “bodice rippers.” But Sarah MacLean is hesitant to completely dismiss these early works despite the rape scenes. That is, romantic adventure stories that often included dynamics of sexual violence. After the success of The Flame and the Flower, many similar kinds of books hit the shelves. The hero of the book rapes the heroine multiple times before they eventually fall in love and live happily ever after. But, The Flame and the Flower was also problematic. The book sold 2.3 million copies in the first 4 years, and opened the floodgates for similar kinds of books. The Flame and the Flower was a romantic adventure story with a female protagonist, and it had something else new too: explicit sex. Woodiwiss looked at the adventure novels her husband was reading and asked herself: where are the ones with leading women, told from a female point of view?Įventually, Woodiwiss sat down and wrote one. By this definition alone one could argue that someone like Jane Austen was basically a romance novelist, and some people do, but MacLean believes the modern era of romance can be traced back to the early 1970s and a self-described Midwestern housewife named Kathleen Woodiwiss. But at the end, they live happily ever after.” The happily ever after (or HEA if you wanna sound in-the-know) has always been a distinguishing feature of the genre. Sarah MacLean, a romance novelist (who once wrote a romance based on a 99PI episode), says that all romance novels have a basic pact with the reader: “I’m going to take you on this wild ride and there will be massive highs and massive lows. A False Proposal was Pam Mingle’s first romance novelĪfter Producer Katie Mingle’s mom wrote a romance novel, Katie set out to understand the romance genre and its classic covers. Previously, it was combined with black, but in 2019, the designers simplified the palette and left only the signature shade of blue. The color used in the logo is called LinkedIn Blue (# 0077B5). Both were designed by typographer Paul D. They look roughly the same: they are sans-serif fonts with strict geometric letterforms. The inscription of the LinkedIn logo can be made in one of two fonts: Source Sans Pro-Light or Source Sans Pro-Semibold. The next version of the origin is connected with one of the founders of the LinkedIn platform: he was a top manager of PayPal, so he chose approximately the same color of the emblem as the monetary system. It is believed that such a choice was dictated by the trend since, at the time, Facebook started working with a similar palette. It is based on a blue shade named LinkedIn Blue. The main element of visual identification of the symbolism is color. Each is applied situationally and depends on the location of the logo. Font and ColorsĪll variants use Source Sans font with Light and Semi-bold varieties, indicating the stability of a professional site. The lettering is in a custom Community font. The blue has gotten a cobalt hue – rich and eye-catching. But it became a couple of tones brighter than before. Like the previous one, the new LinkedIn logo contains only one color instead of three. In this way, the new owners emphasized the individuality of the service. The second segment, on the contrary, is in white font on blue. The thing is that the designers moved the main color to the first part of the word, so now it is blue on a white background. Changes touched the corporate palette, so the sign looks monochromatic and, at the same time, contrasting. Two years after Microsoft took over, the company received a refreshed logo. They also worked with the letter “e,” giving it a personalized look: the lower part was made a little narrower than the upper part and curved. To make the sign more readable, the designers slightly lengthened the letters – almost by a couple of millimeters, so the differences are not immediately obvious. This is due to the fact that the site received an IPO registration on the New York Stock Exchange. After eight years of the logo’s existence, its owners decided to carry out a small redesign.
